New York, 01/13/2021 – The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has selected Equinor’s proposal to build the first U.S. offshore wind towers and transition piece manufacturing site at the Port of Albany. Marmen and Welcon will participate in the project, which is the largest renewable energy procurement in the U.S. to date. In December 2019, Marmen and Welcon signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of offshore wind projects in the United States.

Equinor’s proposal, developed jointly with Marmen, Welcon, and the Port of Albany, will transform the port infrastructure to produce offshore wind towers and transition pieces. This initiative will create up to 350 direct jobs in New York. In addition, to the economic benefits for New York State and local businesses, this new project will have a very positive impact on Marmen and Welcon’s activities. The port development will begin in 2021 and the wind tower production is scheduled for the end of 2023. The realization will generate investments of hundreds of million US dollars.

“Marmen and Welcon are thrilled to be playing an active role in the Port of Albany offshore wind project. We salute Governor Cuomo and the State of New York’s commitments to address climate change with concrete actions and a long-term clean energy plan. We are very proud that our combined expertise in the wind industry can contribute to the development of renewable energy and the State’s actions on clean energy goals,” said Patrick Pellerin, President of Marmen and Carsten Pedersen, Chairman of Welcon.

With the expansion of offshore wind energy on the East Coast, the Port of Albany will become an ideal destination for the procurement of offshore wind components for future energy projects.
